Blog: Radio Ambulante - Guerra en el Bio Bio

This podcast episode is from Radio Ambulante an episode called Guerra en el Bio Bio. It explores the ethics of building hydroelectric energy plants in the lands of the indigenous people of Chile. In the 1990's, there was a high demand for energy and in one of the vast mountain ranges of Chile, there was the perfect location to build one. However, there was an ethical component to this where indigenous families would lose their homes and their sacred land. Their land is sacred and cannot be moved, but the geographic location of made it ideal and would provide power for millions of people in the country. So it brings the question, what would you do? Respect the land of the indigenous or go ahead with the power plant project and provide power for millions of citizens?

I'll let you what occurred. The government knew this project was of utmost importance and decided to proceed regardless of the cost. They did negotiations with the indigenous families and gave them money, which to them was a lot but in the grand scheme of things it was almost nothing. This was because they had no concepts of the worth of the money. They lived protecting the land and the land would protect them. In the end, these families were scammed and forced to integrate into civilization in order to survive. What would you do if you were working for the government on this project?
